Super Green Foods

The ‘Green super foods’ have been around for a little while but you may not have come across them yet or found a decent explanation on what they each do.

Spirulina is a type of algae that grows on the oceans surface. It was discovered to be great for boosting energy levels for every day use or for athletes. One well known Olympic gold medalists I served in a health store many years ago in Sydney said the only supplement he used during training and to boost his performance before an event was spirulina.

It is ridiculously high in protein at around 60-70%, and contains high concentrations of a multitude of vitamins and minerals such as B12, iron, and essential fatty acids. One serving is basically like having a bucket of fresh vegetables. So it is also great in smoothies for children who are fussy eaters too.

Chlorella is a chlorophyll based fresh water plant. Its main function is as a full body cleanser, detoxifier and blood alkalizer. It has been claimed as “one of the most nutritiously dense foods on the planet” by Synergy Natural, the most respected producers of good quality green foods. And it’s not hard to see why with Chlorella’s intense levels of all the amino acids, many vitamins, most macro and trace minerals, antioxidants and the good fats. It is almost considered a ‘complete food’, with virtually the same nutritional content as eating a meal of fish and steamed vegetables.

Barley Grass is a powder made from the young leaves of the barley plant. It’s main function is to help rid the body of over-acid states which can contribute to pain, inflammation, rashes, acne and even being overweight. Barley grass helps to alkalise and balance the natural ph. of the body. It contains chlorophyll, a multitude of vitamins and minerals, enzymes and fibre to boot.

Wheat grass is the grass of the wheat plant either freshly juiced or dried in a powder. Its main functions are to improve digestion and increase the metabolism. Again, super high in most of the vitamins and minerals, trace elements, protein and fibre. Why not grab some today?

Is Red Wine, or the Barrel it’s aged in, beneficial to your health?

Antioxidants are found abundantly in many fresh fruits, vegetables, some grains and legumes and there are many varying types.

They all play a vital function as they protect our cells from ageing and potentially stop them leading to disease, but not all antioxidants are made equal. Most are water-soluble which makes it hard for them to enter the inside of our cells where they can be effective.

Now the #French are notorious lovers of #redwine and are considered to be super #healthy due to their low cardiovascular rates and relatively small frames, even though they eat lots of fats and carbohydrate rich foods.

It was originally believed to be from the red wine they drink, but it turns out it may not be that simple.

While red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, found within the red grapes, Brisbane #Biochemist #GregJardine noted that the French #oak #barrel itself, which the wines are usually aged in, are emitting their own even more powerful antioxidant called #ellagitannin, similar to that found in pomegranate.

“The combination of the red wine antioxidant and French oak antioxidant are like a super food double whammy, although more recently the ‘whammy’ was not double but 700 times more potent!” says Greg Jardine.

So when buying wines, grab some of the red, organic where possible, that has been aged in the French oak, as this is where food really is medicine!

Wellness Tip: Being in The Present Moment

DSC01863

Recently I was floored by news that a good friend of mine had a serious illness. It really rocked me. It made me think about how important it is not to get lost in the rat race that we all feel compelled to run.

That we have to make time for the real and truly important thing’s like, spending quality time just drawing with your little ones, or having a coffee on your own in a beautiful cafe’, or reading a novel that really excited you.

Everyday is a beautiful gift, particularly when we are so lucky here, make that time to cherish it!

Everyone Needs Time to Unwind

IMG_9686

So, this was me a few days ago.

I am super busy, just like everyone else, and juggling #motherhood with working, whilst trying not to drop off the face of the earth in terms of #womanhood. Yes, turns out I am a woman. Sometimes I misplace that important piece of information whilst running from one place to the next, as I’m sure, many other busy parents do.

When we are all so #busy, sometimes we forget who we are, and it’s important to take time out occasionally, to slow the pace and remember why we are doing everything we are doing.

I see it a lot with my patients, they often complain that they can’t #eat #healthily because they simply don’t have the time. But what’s the point of it all then? If you are pushing so hard that you don’t even have time to look after yourself or your family, is it worth it?

So, a valuable #wellness tip is to slow down, smell the roses, make time to prepare and #cook simple, #healthy #foods, to #laugh with your friends, to laugh at yourself, to walk through #beautiful #gardens or bare foot on the #beach and hopefully what sex you are, will eventually come back to you.

Health Benefits of Pomegranates

IMG_9610

Did you know that #pomegranates are packed full of valuable #antioxidants? They are also of quite a distinct structure and form.
According to australian scientists, the pomegranate antioxidant structure is similar to that to which is found in French red wine, but more specifically that found within the french oak barrel itself! It’s also believed to be more powerful an antioxidant than the resveratrol found in the red wine too!
The health benefits reported are anti-ageing, #anti-inflammatory activity, #weight loss, disease prevention and much more.
So add pomegranate to your weekly shopping list, and check out some of my recipes to see how to whip it up into deliciously healthy meals.

Hmmmm, coffee!!

XXUL8897

Ok, so I didn’t last long with the whole giving up coffee thing! I only drink 1 a day, but still, I just wanted to see how I’d go without.

So here I am with super #talented #photographic and #film #artist #glenwilson, and yes, we are both drinking coffee’s at the infamous #SchoolHouse. I’m excited!!

I don’t know what it is, but coffee really does make me happy, I know there’s a serotonin release associated with raw cacao and dark chocolate consumption, but there must be some of that with coffee ingestion too!

So yes, I have good quality coffee back in my life and I’m no longer ranting at people, good for all humanity LOL.

Help Me, I need a Coffee!!

IMG_8976

Ok, so a few days ago I decided it was time to give away with coffee.

I do a Swiss detox every 6 months and it was time, plus you give up coffee for this, but once I finished the detox I thought, maybe I’m better off without the delicious, amazing medicinal drink we know of as coffee.

Seven days on and I’ve been rude to pretty much everyone I know; my family, friends, my boss, some fans who were nice enough to take the time to write in about how great a recipe of mine looked, plus could I look at theirs, being that they consider me “a pro”. Yep, all of those guys got a feisty rant of some kind!!

I’m sitting here, my head still hurts, my eyes are all bleary and I really want to cave, like BAD!!

Good quality, brewed coffee does have some amazing heath benefits, being super high in antioxidants and containing around 7000 biochemical molecules, many of which look to be health promoting. Most other foods only contain 2000!

But I just wanted to see if I could do life without it…honestly, I’m not sure!!

Let’s see how I go.
